Teach with Data

ICPSR provides many resources to support teaching with data. These include:

  • Data-driven learning guides that contain stand-alone exercises that use online data analysis to teach social science concepts.  Their standardized exercises introduce (or reinforce) key concepts in the social sciences by guiding students through a series of questions and related data analyses. Analyses are preset so students can focus on content rather than mechanics of data analysis.
  • Exercise sets containing sequenced activities.
  • Tips and tools for finding available data related to restricted topics in ICPSR, without having to go through an IRB or data use agreement.  While this won't give you access to the restricted data, it will help you understand what is restricted and why, and how to find other related but openly available data.
  • Guides to mapping ICPSR data in RStudio

Analyze

ICPSR offers online analysis components for selected data collections using Survey Documentation Analysis (SDA). This allows users to explore datasets using certain statistical procedures without downloading data and setup files. Click on the Online Analysis link that appears on the Study page. If you do not see an Online Analysis link, the study is not available for online analysis.

You may also

  • browse a list of SDA data collections available for online analysis
  • conduct a search and limit your results by selecting Data Format --> Online Analysis from the filter options

Online data analysis allows users to:

  • Search for variables of interest in a dataset
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics of key variables to determine what further analyses are appropriate
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics for missing data
  • Produce simple summary statistics for reports
  • Create statistical tables and charts from raw data
  • Create a subset of cases or variables from a large collection to save time and storage space when downloading to a personal computer
  • Browse the electronic codebook
